What is a car wash trade area?
The geographic area a wash actually draws customers from. Convention says a 3- to 5-mile radius; the accurate version is a 10-minute drive-time isochrone built on the real road network, because highways, rivers, and one-way streets distort straight-line distance. Every demand and saturation metric only means something computed inside the trade area.
Direct answer
The geographic area a wash actually draws customers from. Convention says a 3- to 5-mile radius; the accurate version is a 10-minute drive-time isochrone built on the real road network, because highways, rivers, and one-way streets distort straight-line distance. Every demand and saturation metric only means something computed inside the trade area.
Radius rings vs. drive-time isochrones
A radius ring assumes customers travel in straight lines. A drive-time isochrone maps who can actually reach the site in 5, 10, or 15 minutes on real roads — which is what matters for a convenience-driven purchase. A river or a divided highway can put half of a "3-mile ring" effectively twenty minutes away.
Why the trade area is the unit of analysis
Population, income, vehicles per household, and competitive supply all get measured inside it. Saturation is hyper-local: one trade area can be badly overbuilt while another two miles away is underserved, so metro-level judgments ("that city is saturated") are unreliable. The saturation math — cars per wash and tunnels per 10,000 households — only works at this granularity.
Draw one
The WashIndex platform generates real 5-, 10-, and 15-minute isochrones from any point, over census demographics and the full wash-supply layer. Definitions live in the glossary, and the working thresholds on the benchmarks reference.
